On September 15, 2015 The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art presented Arthur Chabon Architect with the Newman Award in Residential Architecture at a ceremony in Denver, Colorado for the recently completed Riverbend residential compound in Aspen. The award recognizes excellence in classical architecture, design and related fields and honors those preserving and advancing the classical tradition. The Institute is the leading nonprofit organization, represented by 15 chapters nationwide, dedicated to this cause.
The master of ceremonies, David Tryba, FAIA described the Riverbend House as “an incredibly ambitious project that was very intriguing to the jury...especially in the layout of the plan.” Mr. Tryba noted that working in the classical tradition, Mr. Chabon’s design was quite challenging: “The whole house is built on a great, arched plan. This is very, very difficult to do in a classical approach. There are very few architects have been able to do that; Russel Pope is one and Bob Stern has done some, but this one was an amazing project for our jury.” The jury praised “the craft in the detail, the restraint in the entire project..., the beautiful integration of the site and the use of local materials; all in a modern building that recalls the English Arts and Crafts language.” http://classicist-rmc.org/2015-newman-award-winners/
